Congratulations are in order for one of our member organizations, the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA), which is celebrating its 100th year this fall. Buffalo, New York was the site of the first meeting by the founding members of the group in 1901, and my guess is that no one in that small assembly had any idea of the path their new organization would follow. A century later the association has grown to over 4,600 member companies employing 161,000 people throughout the United States.
The dramatic technological changes that have occurred in the electrical industry in those 100 years and the effects on our standard of living could not have been foreseen by even the most visionary of that period. As a matter of note, our Electric League was established in Kansas City a little over 10 years later in 1912 and has a 90th anniversary next year. To reach 90 years in anything definitely calls for celebration.
Speaking of celebrations, for the third year in a row the Electric League of Missouri and Kansas has been awarded the Golden Globe award for the Best Website by the International League of Electric Associations (ILEA) at their conference in Seattle. John Kelble, Olivia Holcombe and staff should be congratulated as they have set the standard for Electric Leagues throughout the U.S. and Canada.
If you did not attend the August Luncheon at Pierpont's Restaurant, you missed a great program. Dale Warman of Kansas City Power & Light gave a short summary of the history of the International Lineman's Rodeo and Al Feaster, Region 3 Director of BICSI, discussed future directions of the V.D.V. market.
Recently all members received a mailing on the new Fall Class Schedule. If you have misplaced it, check it out on the League's website, www.electricleague.org. There is a great selection. While you're there, you can register for the next League Luncheon, October 26th at the Arrowhead Stadium Club. Bring a guest who might be a potential member. See you there!
Jim Lacy,
President
All Chiefs fans will want to make every effort to attend the member-guest Electric League luncheon scheduled for Oct. 26 at the Arrowhead Club in Arrowhead Stadium. Our speaker will be recently retired Kansas City Chiefs player Tim Grunhard. Tim will offer his perspective on the Kansas City Chiefs season at the midway point.
The luncheon will have a special focus on guests. It will be a great opportunity for guests to network with members in the unique setting of the Arrowhead Club.
Members, don't forget to invite that special guest and we'll see you Oct. 26 at the Arrowhead Club. A registration form was included with the September newsletter.
2001 Electric League Membership Campaign
Your Electric League is kicking off its 2001 membership campaign this month. This is a great time to share the benefits of membership with industry colleagues. Your efforts in recruiting new company members will not go unnoticed. Every member who recruits a new company member from now through Nov. 15, will earn an attractive Electric League logo-portfolio. The member who recruits the most new members will earn a special reward valued at more than $100.
When discussing membership, you'll want to explain to candidates the benefits of belonging to the League including: a partnership with Time Warner Cable giving the League great community awareness, an award-winning website that includes the buyer's guide and service guide, the comprehensive education programs, the luncheons featuring industry topics and networking opportunities, the spring and fall golf outings, the festive annual holiday luncheon, and the upcoming 2002 Trade Show. In all, your Association has a lot to offer. The new company will get membership for the rest of this year and all of 2002. So how do you get started recruiting new members? Two ways: You can call Olivia at the League office, 816-561-5323, for a supply of membership brochures and start handing them out. (Be sure to put your name on each one so we can credit you with the referral.) The League also has designed a member referral form. A copy of this form was included with the September newsletter.
